Holiday Decorating Without The Drama

Home décor magazines, blogs, HGTV and Pinterest…It’s a candy store of creativity out there. Image after image of perfectly styled spaces for every holiday under the sun. It’s endless entertainment to browse and dream but for sanity’s sake it’s also important to keep just a little perspective on how much holiday decorating makes sense for you.  Our biggest tip? Aim for enough decorating to satisfy your creative side but not so much that all the fun gets sucked out of the season. Here’s how: 1. Focus on...

Dreaming of Spring

I am so surprised — and thrilled — to find out our porch is featured on the cover of the latest issue of Vintage Style!  I’ve enjoyed the publication’s tips and ideas so much in the past, it’s really an honor to be a part of it! This issue of Vintage Style is on the stands now and should be out until April.     As in past issues, Vintage Style has great tips, DIY ideas and plenty of photos for inspiration.  Here’s a sneak peak at “25 Ways to Love Living Outdoors.” There’s...

Twig is open!

Twig is open!

Such exciting news to share! I’ve taken the leap and opened Twig, a home decor and gift shop here in Richmond Virginia. Whoo Hoo! I’m beyond excited and having so much fun! The doors opened the evening of November 9th and the past month has been so busy with such a welcoming response from all over. I have so much to do to get “my ducks in a row,” from getting this Love Where You Live site “Twigified” to setting up an online shop. But that will all come after the Christmas shopping rush wraps up. In the...

American Dream Cottages

I’m so excited to be able to tell you that American Dream Cottages is now out on the stands and I’m honored to be a part of it! My latest personal project (what we like to call our farmhouse-in-the-city) is featured along with the beautiful photography of Tony Giammarino and the fresh writing style of Julie Slattery.  Thanks to both of them! The publication features 16 homes plus plenty of designer tips and DIY ideas.  I love the wide variety of styles packed into the pages — from romantic bedrooms and bright...

Light the way

Light the way

Recently, I’ve been on a lighting binge in our home. It started when I couldn’t find exactly what I wanted for our kitchen renovation, morphed into impromptu lighting design and finished up (for now) with some crazy late-night lampshade painting. The moral of this story? There are potential lighting fixtures everywhere if you just look with a fresh eye….or some fabric paint! Here’s one of a matched pair of lamps I designed for our entry way. And here’s our sink task lighting. This one was fun — I...

Uni-Holiday Warning

Uni-Holiday Warning

Ah, the holidays! The decorators in all of us love this time of year — one festive event right after the other. Halloween rolls right into Thanksgiving and before you know it, it’s the day after Thanksgiving and of course that means…Christmas! Now, I’m not a Scrooge at all. I absolutely love getting the house creeped out for Halloween, full of bounty for Thanksgiving and sparkling for Christmas. What I don’t love is a little something I like to call the Uni-holiday. I will explain by simply saying please, please...

A Little Autumn Color

A Little Autumn Color

I’ve really been enjoying the change of seasons — particularly the rich colors that autumn brings. Here are a few images for you. For me, one of the best ways to celebrate the welcome change from summer to fall is to bring the gold, purple and deep reddish-orange colors into the house. Take a pair of clippers out to your yard and gather what you see.  Look for color and texture rather than just blooms to help signal the quiet beauty of fall.  It’s hard not to feel thankful when nature reminds us how wonderful the world...

A Quick Idea For Spring Decorating

Posted by on Mar 29, 2010 in Uncategorized | 0 comments

Need an easy way to go from the grey of winter to the green of spring in your home? Here’s an instant fix: Buy a flat of wheat grass from your local florist or from your local grocery store. “Plant” it in pots, bowls, a glass — anything that strikes your fancy. Have fun and tuck some wheat grass in unexpected containers. Then place them wherever you want to announce the arrival of brighter days. This mini terra cotta pot is one of a set of six which I used to freshen up a winter-weary covered porch. The wheat grass used...

Pillow Talk

Pillow Talk

I’ve recently received a few questions about changing a home’s decor seasonally. I know, I know — decorating magazines will tell you to change the slip covers on your furniture, change your curtains, even change your rugs at the start of each new season. Right. For most of us, that’s just not realistic. Not enough time and not enough money. But the idea certainly is on target. In general, warmer weights, textures and colors are great for a cozy winter feel and lighter weight materials, colors and open, airy textures...

A Love Where You Live Christmas

A Love Where You Live Christmas

Surprise! I’ve posted! I’ll skip the apologies about leaving the blogging world for soooo very long because you all know that I’d be here every day if only I could. But, sigh, working for a living always gets in the way. Instead, I want to jump right in with some pictures from the past couple of weeks. I have a few others which I’ll try to get out here in the next few days.  All in all, some snow, some holiday, lots of fun!  Hope you all had — and are having — a joyful holiday season.  How did your...
